MD5 (Message Digest Algorithm 5) is a cryptographic hash function. The hash value is 128 bits.
It is the predecessor of MD4 and is considered to have improved security (in any case, as of 2018, it should not be used for purposes that require the strength required for a cryptographic hash function). It was developed in 1991. Its creator was Ronald Rivest, the same person who developed MD4.
